Best Apartments Near USM (University of Southern Mississippi)
The University of Southern Mississippi, also known as Southern Miss, is located in the heart of Hattiesburg. It was founded in 1910 and has three major roadways surrounding the beautiful southern campus that is dotted with live oaks – Hardy Street, 4th Street, and Highway 49. At the front entrance of the campus beyond the Century Gate that was built to celebrate USM’s 100 year anniversary, you will be greeted by the All-American Rose Garden. The garden attracts visitors nationwide and has been a part of the campus since 1974.
USM has seen many updates and renovations over the past few years, such as the Thad Cochran Center that holds the Barnes and Nobles bookstore, the Fresh Food Company, as well as many ballrooms and meeting spaces that are perfect for events and conferences. The Trent Lott National Center is another one of USM’s masterpieces which is used for economic development and research. One of the most recent is Scianna Hall which will house the new College of Business. There is currently a campaign for a new College of Nursing Building, which will help Southern Miss excel even more in healthcare education. In recent years, USM added on a state of the art community style housing complex for its National PanHellenic Conference sororities called The Village. Jimmy Buffett even attended Southern Miss, which is where is started to play guitar while he was a member of the fraternity Kappa Sigma. All of the fraternity houses at USM are located their own street in which the students like to call “Frat Row”. Century Park is another community style housing complex that houses honor college students and Luckyday and Leadership scholars.
Athletics are a huge part of Southern Miss. Football season at USM means one thing: tailgating in The District, and you better bring your black and gold! Get ready to hear Southern Miss To The Top shouted all over campus and in The Rock stadium along with lots of entertainment from Seymour d’Campus, the charming and fun Golden Eagle Mascot. From the games you can experience The Pride marching band, which was formed in 1923 and is greatly appreciated coast-to-coast. The great Brett Favre even got his start at USM, as well as recent Hall of Famer Ray Guy. “I’ll See Ya At The Pete!” – a common saying among Southern Miss baseball fans, and they come from all over to watch the Conference USA Southern Miss baseball team play at Pete Taylor Park. The talented team has went it to the World Series in years past, and many players go on to minor and major league teams. Basketball is another sport that is enjoyed by USM fans at The Reed Green Coliseum.
